The Dutch pension system has three pillars: the state pension (AOW), a workplace pension built through your employer, and private savings such as an annuity (lijfrente). As an expat your AOW builds up for each year you live or work in the Netherlands, so when you arrived and when you leave affects what you receive. Your workplace pension stays yours even if you change jobs or move abroad.
