What is a BSN (burgerservicenummer) and how do I get one?

A BSN (burgerservicenummer) is your unique Dutch citizen service number, needed for work, banking, tax, health insurance and buying a home. You get one by registering in person with a municipality (gemeente) in the Personal Records Database (BRP), or via the non-resident register (RNI) for short stays. You usually book an appointment and bring valid ID and proof of address.
