Home equity (overwaarde) is the difference between your home’s current market value and the mortgage you still owe on it. If the property is worth more than the remaining mortgage you have positive equity; if it is worth less, you have negative equity or a potential residual debt (restschuld). You can often use built-up equity by releasing it (overwaarde opnemen) when moving, renovating or buying another property.
