What is the difference between a bank guarantee and a deposit (bankgarantie of waarborgsom)?

After signing the purchase agreement you usually give the seller security, either a deposit (waarborgsom) paid to the notary or a bank guarantee (bankgarantie), where a bank promises to pay if you default. Both protect the seller for the same amount. Which suits you depends on whether you have the cash free or prefer the bank to stand surety.
