Asbestos (asbest) is common in older Dutch homes and is mainly a risk when it is damaged or disturbed during renovation, not when left intact. Removal must be carried out by a certified asbestos-removal company (gecertificeerd asbestverwijderingsbedrijf), often after an inventory survey. The removal cost can frequently be included in a renovation mortgage or building depot (bouwdepot).
